Today was Jonathan's follow up appointment for his eyes. It's been 2 weeks since we started the Atropine drops. These drops were placed daily in his good eye which made his vision blurry, thus causing him to use his weak eye and in time make the muscle stronger. Our doctors final conclusion...Jonathan's right eye has not increased in strength therefor our next course of action is patching his good eye. While awake Jonathan will wear a patch over his left eye (the good eye) thus forcing him to focus with his right (the weak eye). We go back in 2 more weeks to see (hopefully) if his eye is making any progression. Our prescription is for 3 months worth of patches so I'm not too optimistic that 2 weeks is all it will take. Sounds like we're looking at a few months.
As a child/teenager/young adult you never truly understand what it means to be a parent. You think it's simple, tell your children what to do and where to be and that's most of the work. Once we become parents we realize why mom stayed up while until we were home, how dad felt when we broke our arm jumping off the swing set, or why mom uses the arm hold when she unexpectantly slams on the brakes in the car. When I was 3 I was too young to realize or acknowledge my parents heartache when they first learned that I needed glasses (which were much thicker 27 years ago than they are now), which was followed by a patch for 2 years, which was followed with two different surgeries. I know that there are worse things in life. I know that Jonathan is fine and that this is the least of our worries. At the same time I'm an emotional mother who cares deeply for my child and feels as if I'm the cause of this minor obstacle. I read not that long ago that in most cases the fathers genes are passed onto their daughters and the mothers genes are passed onto their sons. Thus far Jonathan's following my footsteps. In some ways this is comforting because I've been there and done that. Today I have 20/20 vision. What more can I ask for?
Oh, yeah, we also put an offer in on a house Brewer today. The offer stands good until Saturday at 6pm so hopefully we'll hear by tomorrow. Fingers crossed!!
