I took Jonathan for a speech evaluation this morning. Of course there's only so much that can be determined from a one hour meeting but nonetheless I think it went pretty well. Basically I've been concerned about Jonathan's speech for a little while now. I know there's no textbook when it comes to development and there's no set of instructions when it comes to parenting. I get this but I want to do everything in my power to know that I am working hard to help Jonathan and support him. The speech therapist did agree that perhaps, if you look at the range, Jonathan is around 18 months in terms of expressive language. Again, there is no true normal. He's chattery which is positive. It's still too early to tell if he's not able to say words or if he's choosing not to say words. I was given some good feedback in terms of working to improve Jonathan's speech and encourage his expressive language to develop - most of which we already do. We were asked to get a hearing evaluation just to rule out the possibility of any hearing loss or problems (ex: fluid in the ear). Between that time we'll continue what we're doing to encourage Jonathan to talk more and reassess in a month.
Countdown: 1 week until Christmas, 2 weeks 6 days until Jonathan's surgery
